1. Development while one is in the current job ASSIGNMENT
Examples of this type of development include

Improving one’s job efficiency, or work processes

Participating in an additional “stretch” or first time assignment

Developing someone else to do the job you are doing

Seeking and addressing feedback from your colleagues about what would make your work more effective/efficient

Networking with colleagues outside your functional area to learn more about the business

Capturing lessons from things you are doing with your current assignment

Building relationships external to Care with people who do similar work you do in other organizations

Volunteering to help others in the organization beyond your specific function so that you can learn about their work

Serving as a spokesperson about your work and Care with external audiences

Planning and participating in a TDY (temporary duty assignment) to expand your knowledge of the business or a different culture

Joining a professional organization that addresses the work you do and become a contributing member to its programs

Job sharing between two people

Serving temporarily in an “acting” role when a position is vacant and takes time to fill

Facilitating meetings for your work group

2. Development through targeted COACHING
Examples of this type of development include

Using your manager as a sounding board when you engage in new work or problem solving

Inviting feedback from your manager around a developmental goal
-
Preparing for your performance discussions in advance with questions that will help you learn about areas for improvement

Knowing your strengths as a result of feedback and how to best use them so that the team’s results will be positively impacted
-
Seeking specific feedback from your colleagues or external stakeholders on an area you want to be better at
-
Inviting a colleague you trust and admire to be your mentor (friend) for a specific period of time so that you can discuss issues and brainstorm best approaches for addressing them
-
Being a coach or mentor yourself, to someone new to the organization
-
Be a coach to your manager—you may have knowledge and skill on issues he or she would appreciate help with
3. Development through EDUCATION and TRAINING
Examples of this type of development include
-
Participating in Care-sponsored programs and training that will build your technical knowledge or skill
-
Volunteering to facilitate or lead a training session using Care materials and guidebooks
-
Identifying external programs that will support your development objectives and ask to enroll
-
Completing e-learning courses that are available through CARE Academy as well as other universities and organizations
-
Creating a mini-training session yourself around on a topic the team or organization needs
