Process Analysis: An approach to collect and document an organization’s work activities or processes, and to analyze them with the goal of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization.

Process: A collection of activities, usually sequenced in time, that are required to achieve a required result. For example, a capacity building process describes the activities required to ensure that the staff have the adequate skills needed for the job they are required to perform.

Process step: An activity that is part of a process. For example, attend training session could be a process step for the capacity building process.

Process map: A visual representation of the steps of a process.

Process levels: Levels of detail in process representation. Level 1 is refers to the highest level process map. Levels 2 and 3 represent successively more detailed process maps that are linked to the higher level maps.

Measures: Metrics that indicate the quality of a process.

Outcome measures: These are measures that indicate the quality of the output of a process.

Process measures: These are measures that indicate the quality of execution within a process.

Process impact matrix: A process analysis tool that maps processes to organizational objectives so that the most important processes can be identified. .

Risk analysis: A process analysis tool that is used to identify sources of errors in processes and to develop strategies to prioritize and mitigate the errors

Process Management Team (PMT): Refers to the organizational team responsible for documenting, monitoring, improving and sharing knowledge about the key processes in an organization.

Functional Organization: An organization whose work activities are structured by departments resulting in lack of coordination and inconsistent and inefficient service.

Process Organization: An organization whose work activities are structured around cross functional process teams oriented towards effective and efficient service delivery.
